Jacques Massu was a general in the French army during the Algerian crisis, as you might know. He had been part of a movement opposing de Gaulle, but had recanted. There is a story of the French president meeting him at the Elysée, and greeting him with, ‘Ah Massu, are you still an idiot?’ The response was, ‘Yes, mon général, still a Gaullist.’
