One of the reasons why I started sympathising with LGBT was that one of my dearest childhood friends was the subject of an arranged marriage with a woman who turned out to have gender dysphoria. That was in socially conservative Mauritius. Gays were classified as perverts, transgender women as Jane Hadcocks, and teased. My naturally compassionate compatriots drew the line at insulting. People never stopped to ask themselves about the torment of growing up in the wrong body, did not pause to ask whether one had any choice.
