Certainties

Who said there are no certainties?

You can be certain you will never win the lotto

nor will I.

It’s a certainty

that you’ll never see an ambulance

or a fire-engine

at a traffic lights,

nor will I.

I saw one last century.

When running after a bus

with heavy shopping

and there’s one at the Stop,

the moment you are within touch

it closes its door and is speeding away.

In a thriller if they let go

a suspect in the hope that he will lead

to Mr Big

within minutes those tailing him

will lose him.

In a football match if one team

has had 80% possession and

twenty plus shots on target

and not scored with one minute left

the other team with no shot on target

will score a fluke goal in the last minute

and win the game.

Time was when Saturday and Sunday

followed weekdays

but now with lockdown

everyday is Sunday.

In twelve months

we’ll all be a whole year older,

but few of us will be one year wiser.
